How Coastal Humidity Shortens Water Heater Life in Corpus Christi

How Coastal Humidity Shortens Water Heater Life in Corpus Christi

Living near the bay has its perks, but salty, humid air is hard on anything made of steel — including your water heater. In Corpus Christi we routinely see tanks, gas valves and vent connectors corroded years before they should be.

Most tank water heaters are designed to last 8–12 years. In garages and utility closets near the coast, rust on the jacket, burner assembly and fittings can cut that lifespan short if the unit isn't maintained.

An annual flush and anode check costs far less than cleaning up after a tank that fails in the garage.

Warning Signs Your Water Heater Is Struggling

Take a look at your water heater a few times a year. Rust at the base, water in the drain pan, popping or rumbling sounds, and rusty hot water are all signs it needs attention.

Hard water adds sediment to the bottom of the tank, which makes the burner work harder and causes overheating. Flushing the tank once a year and replacing the anode rod every few years goes a long way.

  • Flush sediment once a year
  • Inspect the anode rod every 2–3 years
  • Test the T&P relief valve
  • Check vent connectors for rust
  • Keep the area around the unit dry
